The Caribbean is currently facing a burgeoning humanitarian crisis. Thousands of people are being displaced with nowhere to go.  Due to the Caribbean's frail infrastructure, roads have collapsed, homes are underwater, and electricity has been cut off.  

Puerto Rico 

The electric grid which has suffered since Maria has also collapsed as torrential rains pounded the island dropping historic amounts of water in the double digits, leaving 100% of the population without electricity. We have reports of homes destroyed and hundreds have been displaced and forced to leave their homes due to unsafe conditions.

In Puerto Rico it is estimated that electricity will not be restored for weeks or months to come. Many areas are also without clean water, cut off from services and supplies. Many people have been left extremely vulnerable, especially the elderly and those with medical conditions. 

Dominican Republic 

The hurricane shifted into category 2 and hit the Dominican Republic causing much damage and flooding. “More than 1 million were left without running water after Hurricane Fiona ripped through the Dominican Republic. It's only expected to get stronger” CNN

“Nearly 800 people were brought to safety by emergency workers in the Dominican Republic, according to the country's emergency management director of operations, Juan Manuel Mendez. At least 519 people were taking refuge in the country's 29 shelters Monday, he said.”

Damage assessment is ongoing as the Hurricane makes its way towards Bermuda.

We are looking to address the immediate needs of the elderly, the disabled, those with medical conditions, single mothers, the poor, and the homeless. 

These immediate needs are food, water, medical supplies and cleaning supplies.

The 3 Puerto Rican Imams - Imam Wesley Lebron, Yusuf Rios, & Daniel Hernandez

As Imams who are also Puerto Rican and from the Caribbean, we feel best equipped to help our people. We assisted in bringing immediate relief efforts to Puerto Rico after the devastation of Hurricane Maria in 2017. These efforts continued consistently for a year and a half. We were one of the first Muslim non-profit Humanitarian organizations on the ground doing work and the only organization that did work long-term in Puerto Rico. We also were on the ground assisting and bringing relief after the earthquakes that took place in Puerto Rico after the devastation of Maria. We know the terrain,  have worked with numerous grassroots organizations,  have made political connections, and are in constant contact with those who are on the ground working with those in need.

Our leaders have been at the forefront of not only educating Latino and new Muslims about Islam, but they have also been at the forefront of dawah through action. They believe in showing up when people are in most need.
