Your Support Unlocks Education for Refugees in Malaysia

A New Dawn for Rohingya Refugees

In 2025, Care Beyond Borders (CBB) opened the Imam Bukhari Advanced Education Center in Butterworth, Penang, Malaysia—a beacon of hope for Rohingya refugee children. These young souls, fleeing persecution in Myanmar, have long been denied a basic right: education. Now, in a community where over 2,000 Rohingya children lack access to learning, our school offers it free of charge—books, meals, and all. But this lifeline depends on you. Will you help us keep their dreams alive?

Opening Ceremony of the Center.

The Crisis: Education Out of Reach

Malaysia hosts over 190,000 refugees, 85% of them Rohingya Muslims—one of the world’s most persecuted minorities. Yet, as a non-signatory to the UN Refugee Convention, Malaysia bars these children from public schools. In Penang, home to the second-largest refugee population in the country, over 70% of the 54,450 refugee children—including 2,000 Rohingya in the state—have no formal education. Without it, they face begging, labor, or Christian missionary schools that risk their faith. The Imam Bukhari Advanced Education Center is their Muslim-led answer—a safe space to learn and grow.

Our Mission: Quality Education, Islamic Values

Located at No. 5040, Levels 2 & 3, Jalan Assumption, Butterworth, our school serves the heart of Penang’s Rohingya community—Bagan Dalam, Kampung Perlis, Ujung Batu, and Kampung Benggali. Started this year with three classes (K.G., Class 1, Class 2), we’re already welcoming students aged 4-15. From 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, they study:

  • English, Math, Bahasa Melayu: Building foundational skills.
  • Quran, Hadith, Dua: Nurturing their Islamic identity.
  • Science, Drawing: Sparking curiosity and creativity.

With 50-minute lessons, breaks, and free breakfast and lunch, we blend Malay and international curricula, taught in English and Rohingya to bridge language gaps—all fully funded by donors like you.

The Impact: From 100 to 200 Students

We’ve begun with 100 students, but with your support, we aim to grow to 200 within months—serving a community of over 330 Rohingya families across four villages. Every child gets books, uniforms, and meals at no cost, while our dedicated teachers and staff earn salaries to ensure quality education. This isn’t just school—it’s a shield against despair, and a path to integration.

Be Their Bridge to a Brighter Tomorrow

Education is every child’s right, yet for Rohingya refugees, it’s a rare gift. In Penang, where options are scarce, the Imam Bukhari Advanced Education Center stands as their hope—a Muslim-led school free from external agendas. Join Care Beyond Borders today to keep this mission alive. Your support can rewrite their story from deprivation to dignity.
