Join Dr. Hatem Bazian in an Emergency Campaign to provide relief to Tunisia:
The director of the local public hospital of Mateur breaks down as they run out of oxygen. There is a nationwide shortage of medical oxygen. The reserves of many hospitals can barely cover limited hours.
We are raising much needed funds that may be used to send oxygen equipment and other intensive care unit needs to Tunisia. Tunisia seems to be undergoing her worst coronavirus wave with a dilapidated health system and oxygen-less hospitals, where nearly 18,000 people in total have already died. We will be calling on suppliers in the U.S., Spain, Turkey, and Italy to procure equipment such as oxygen concentrators, generators, medical supplies, tests, and reagents to ship them out immediately.
New Delta Variant:
As many as 9,500 cases are being reported daily with a wide circulation of the Delta variant. The variant accounts for more than 75% of Covid-19 patients admitted to hospitals with lung problems. Tunisia has reported the highest COVID-19 mortality rate of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region and the African continent in July. In less than one week, the number of deaths almost doubled, from 119 deaths on 5 July to 189 deaths on 8 July. Vaccine coverage is still low with only 6% of the population being fully vaccinated. Tens of thousands of people that have turned up at country's 29 new vaccination centers have found there are not enough vaccines to go round. This illustrates the enormous threat countries face when they cannot provide enough vaccine doses, especially as the delta variant continues to spread. Oxygen beds are at 90% occupancy and ICU beds are at 95% occupancy. Hospitals are overwhelmed with limited numbers of available beds, and risk of shortage of oxygen supply.
The country's healthcare system has collapsed and the Tunisian army has been deployed to enforce a new lockdown in some areas as daily records have been broken regularly since the start of the pandemic. The political situation has only expedited the collapse. In recent years, a succession of feuding governments has struggled to provide guidance or rejuvenate the economy. The heavily indebted country has witnessed the pandemic worsen the economic situation, where protests in response to poverty and high unemployment have begun.
Help us help our Tunisian brothers & sisters:
The announcement of the collapse of Tunisia's health system is a direct result of intensive care departments being full and doctors being overburdened by a rapid outbreak of cases and deaths. With lockdowns in place the country is so far rejecting a full national lockdown due to the economic crisis. With a weak health system and widespread vaccine hesitancy, the Tunisian government has failed to operate effectively in managing the pandemic. We call on all donors to help us help the people of Tunisia. In order to act quickly and successfully we must raise the maximum amount of funds to reverse the current reality in Tunisia as God decrees, so many more of our sisters and brothers in need may be saved.
